There is huge pressure for celebs to reach ridiculous skinny sizes these days. I bet back in the Marilyn Monroe's days there was not as much cases of bulimia and Anorexia!

Jane Fonda was my celeb icon when I was younger... despite the video fitness tapes being decades old I loved the New Workout video and thought Jane was brill! I could not believe that she had struggled with bulimia for so long. I think she was one of the first celebs to open out about it ... very brave I say.

The list is always expanding with celebrities opening out about their battles. I believe if anyone is dieting to reach an unrealistic weight (past their set-point) then they are going to be at battle with food and their own body. This will more surely than not lead to a binge! How people deal with this can turn into a purge. Not all the time... some may binge and come to realization and acceptance about their body (so they ditch the diet and do not develop an eating disorder. If the continual pattern starts... dieitng... inevitable binging.. freaking out and purging.. this only snowballs!

Spice Girl 'Gerry Halliwell' battled with bulimia for many years... she continually starved herself and could not understand why she was uncontrollable around food. At one point she wanted to admit herself into a psycho ward. I remember the feeling! Sometimes I would think I was insane because I could not stop eating... the drive and urges were far too overpowering for me to control. Understanding this as a natural survival instinct instead of madness makes so much sense and helped kick start my recovery!

Paula Abdul (American, former cheerleader/choreographer/singer, now American Idol judge)

She suffered for many years and went public with the disease in the early 1990s.

Lucky for Paula, she can afford to hire a nutritionist who practially lives with her! But she still struggles. Here is a quote from her:

"Me and my body have been on two separate sides. We've never, until recently, been on the same side. Whether I was sticking my head in the toilet or exercising for hours a day, I was spitting out the food -- and the feelings."

Karen Carpenter's story (you can watch films about her life story on YouTube) is really awakening for me. I suggest people struggling with EDs watch it. It's tragic but then it is what makes it effective in making you want to recover for good. Personally, it made me realize that there are some consequences (mostly health-related) that you can't undo anymore. So better start stopping now before things get worse.

Katie Price wannabe Chantelle Houghton famous for being famous twonk and glamour model (now managed by Peter Andre's management) claimed in an OK magazine that she was bulimic. She said she had been making herself sick for a few weeks since she split up with her husband and didn't realise she was bulimic (I was starting to get annoyed at this point) Alongside the article were pictures of her posing in a series of 7 deadly sins pictures, 1 on a bed wearing a sexy nightdress or something surrounded by sweets cakes crisps etc (now I was really peed off!). When questioned about this action as she had clearly upset genuine bulimic people (including me) she said I was bulimic but I'm not any more and the photos were about the 7 deadly sins. I couldn't believe how someone would use something like that to get publicity!

RANT- (My apologies now-)

But what about the ones that havn't and still look absolutly gorgeous- These posts are having a little negative effect on recovery to be fair- Have we got to suffer to look like Ashley Simpson, Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey etc- No we bloody well do not- It might be my twisted perspective on things, but all i see when i look down a list of gorgeous stars that have got eating disorders is 'I dont care- i wanna look like that'-
C'on ppl - Surely you can make a list twice as long of celebs that are stunning and it is purely down to the right diet and a healty amount of hard work/excersize!!!- Now that will work tonnes better on recovery that this rubbish!

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

I totally know what you're saying

I can see how this could maybe have a negative effect on a lot of people, talking about gorgeous celebrities in general (whether they have ed's or not) I could see being a trigger for so many people, because of the need for always wanting to compare and then feeling inadequate as a result. However I do see the good intentions in this topic, to think about people we might look up to or aspire to be like, who we think are perfect but actually they suffer or have suffered just like we do.

Truth is though we can never know a true list of people who are healthy at the same time. We could make suggestions on people we think are healthy because they project a healthy lifestyle or because they are at a healthy weight, but then how many of us here are at a healthy weight but far from healthy.

But yes I think that while I actually liked reading this thread, the whole topic could be a little upsetting for a lot of people here x x

"..I know you don’t feel pretty, even though you are. But it wasn’t your beauty that found room in my heart.."

"..Take some time and learn to breathe, and remember what it means to feel alive and to believe something more than what you see.."

I agree- I saw this topic

I agree- I saw this topic several months ago- and never opened to thread, because seriously- who cares- but I was listening to fiona apple last night- and her music made always makes me wonder if she was talking about ed. Its like celebrity gossip- but it goes to show that the stars suffer too- its like a pandemic occurrence.

I always suspected it, but

I always suspected it, but after she wrote "paper bag"- i thought she gave it away. plus her latest album- i think shes talking about him. anyways- she is stunning- i love her music either way.

I think people would say that we are "stunning, intelligent, and confident". having an eating disorder is like being part of a secret society- and even though we may portray a certain image- we might be dealing with things no one has any idea of.

I agree with Catherine.

I agree with Catherine. There's no way of knowing. But there's definitely got to be more celebs that don't have ed's than those that do. I also don't want to sound big-headed but I think many people would say that I am "stunning, intelligent, successful and confident". I'm not ugly, I'm a healthy weight, I come across confident and I"m studying to be a doctor. But no one knows what is going on inside...

I feel sorry for those that do.( You forgot to add Mischa Barton- look at her weight fluctuations in the last 9 months!) But even those that do have access to all the support that they could possibly need. Inpatient treatments (which I want!) and didn't someone earlier mention that Paula Abdul has a nutritionist who lives with her. If I had someone with me 24hours a day then I wouldn't have an opportunity to binge. They also can get personal trainers to help them exercise and get the most fabulous bodies ever. It's not realistic for most people.

And another thing that pisses me off are people who were like 'I had an eating disorder but I'm better now' and they still look bloody skeletal. Maybe they do now eat more healthily, but they clearly still feel a need to be thin.

Also, has anyone on here told EVERYONE they know about it? I'm feeling slightly tempted after my third bad day in a row of just sending an email to everyone I know so I can't hide it anymore!

I've had that feeling

Where I just want to tell everyone, because then I feel like it would be easier. In reality though, I wouldnt want ever single person in my life to know, because for some, Im sure it would be all they could ever think of you know? However letting a few of the people who are closer to you in might not be such a bad idea. Having support from friends is so valuable, I very recently told one of my closest friends, although didnt really go into much detail, but hopefully we will talk about it again. I am sure that having a handful of understanding people know what you are going through could be really beneficial, but you would have to remember that often people really dont give us the response we were hoping for because they are so afraid, or confused or scared.

Yes I totally agree with you too, there must be more that don't have ed's but you right, we could just never know :) x x

It doesnt matter whether

It doesnt matter whether people want to list celebs or not.

The point is, bulimia and eating disorders in general has no boundaries and can affect anyone and at any time regardless of age, race, sex etc.

Just goes to show that celebs are under immense pressure too in their industries to maintain their 'perfect'looks and figures. They like us are trapped in this hellish world of e.d's. No single person is to blame and at least we all have the opportunity to join the real world, something they may never have.

Clebs and Culture

the thing about our society is, we know these people are bulimic, yet we still hold them up as examples of beauty. One of my cheerleader's mother's once said : "There's nothing wrong with anorexia, it's just what some girls have to do in order to be thin and pretty". She was a 5th grade teacher, married to a prominent bussiness man in our community and very active in the local Country Club Social scene.

I believe that Hollywood and the media often have that same mentatlity, one week US weekly tells us Britney Spears is a mess and a bulimic psycho, then she releases a comeback album and the articles are about "How to get back in shape like Britney".

Celebrity gossip has contributed deeply to my bulimia and even more to my thought process when I was "ana"- From Nicole richie and her pro-ana braclet, to thinspo pictures of renee zelweger and christina ricci.

As a high school teacher, cheerleading coach, fashion club advisor and someone who hopes to someday be a mother, I really want to change this element of our culture. My recovery goal is not just to get healthy myself, but to start making a positive influence on the collective cultural body image of the next generation!

i definitely believe that the media has a huge part to play in my developing an eating disorder. and a part to play in maintaining it too... i'm so proud that you want to recover and then be a positive influence on others.
unfortunately it seems that only by having your life destroyed by an eating disorder, can a person realise that it's a really unhealthy and negative thing!

Thats true Learning beauty//

Thats true Learning beauty// celebrities know that if they are underweight, the media applauds them for it, depending on the mag though. The other week there were pics of Megan Fox in a bikini and the caption went along the lines of she's too thin//another mag that same day was applauding her new beach body///what the frig, talk about mixed mssges. I heard that some celebs gain weight just to make headlines when they lose it again. Being a healthy weight is just not interesting in hollywood, It must be hard for celebs though not wanting to conform to the skinny way but at the same time knowing that u will get more work if yr thin.
