Chest pains!!!

okay so it's happened to me before: i get these weird shooting pains on the left side of my chest starting at the bottom of my rib cage all the way up to my heart. but lately i've had them more and more often and sometimes they scare me so much i just hold my breath and it hurts even more.
has anyone ever had this? is this related to purging or is it normal?

Thank you for all your wonderful comments - I am going to try and be on this site more. I found it hard to be confronted daily with something that haunted me for 10 years, -even though I live totally free from bulimia/eating disorders, I wanted complete freedom from my past for a while and to focus my time on my beautiful baby boy. However, I now want to help others break free! Thank you for all your lovely comments- really all the credit goes to my wonderful husband he's the driving force behind this fab site! Please consult your GP!

Chest pains are serious. You need to consult your GP ASAP to get things checked out. If you are purging through self induced vomiting you might have caused internal damage.

Hey polarkitty, nice pic!

Hey polarkitty, nice pic! I've had pains that seem to be EXACTLY where my heart is siutated. Never had them during a purge or close after, but at the most random times, usually when Im sedentary. Its usually in the same place but have had the exact same pain on the other side which made me think its probably not my heart. You can get something called an ECG done which monitors your heart beat, any abnormalities in rhythm etc. Youd have to go thru your doc tho. Bulimia can cause severe complications to your heart so this might not be a bad idea? My heart does goes SUPER fast when I purge as well..

Doctor.

Most towns have a doctor at hand. If you are attending boarding school then see your school nurse who will refer you to the nearest doctor.

Mental Health - State Assistance?

I've been thinking of seeking some sort of therapy for my ED - lately the anxiety has been too much to handle, which isn't me at all. But I have no job, no money, and no health insurance. Are there typically state assistance programs for people with EDs? I know there was mental health assistance in my home state (CT), but I'm not sure about NY - does anyone know?

I've had them

I've had chest pains on the left side on & off randomly & not super often for probably 10 years... but here's the thing - for me I realized it seems to be linked to my anxiety over food. It happens after I eat... and I can only count a handful of times it has happened in the last few years, so I know it's nothing serious and I haven't keeled over because of it.

DEFINITELY get it checked out to be sure its nothing serious!
When it first happened to me when I was 18 or so, I went to the doctor and they did one of those stress tests where they hook you up to a machine & you run on a treadmill - and nothing. I was fine. About 2 years ago I had an MRI of my chest for a possible lump in my breast & I figured if there were any other damage, they would have seen that then too - but nothing.

When I first started my structured eating on this site, I had them the first few days & then I realized I had so much anxiety & worked to calm it.

Get it checked out to rule out anything serious for sure!

Acid Reflux?

This has been happening to me for a while now about a year. I went to the doctor about it and she said it was Acid Reflux gave me some medicine and a week later it was gone but I still get it on an occasion. It felt like alot of pressure in the middle of my rib cage and sometimes I would get a shooting pain. I don't know if it really is Acid Reflux b/c I didn't tell my doctor about my ED but I know it's not normal and I would see your doctor.

me too!

my sister legitimately has acid reflux, so when i told my mom it felt like i had crazy heartburn, she didn't think it was anything strange. i do think it's related to throwing up though, at least in my case.
my sister has a weak esophagus or something like that that makes it hard for the muscles in her throat to keep down her stomach bile.
so i think i've basically given myself acid reflux by throwing up all the time. it weakens everything in your asophagus so bile seeps back up and burns. i've noticed it's especially painful after drinking alcohol or eating spicy food. lately, though, it's been happening when i eat anything powerfully flavored, even just salty peanuts or very sweet jelly. i think i've just confused my body into reflexively wanting things i put into my stomach to come back up.
but even if you can identify it as acid reflux, that doesn't mean you shouldn't get checked out because it can do serious damage to your insides and even encourage esophageal cancer.

I have had a similar thing in

I have had a similar thing in the past. Although it was frightening at the time, it passed after a while. I mentioned it to my dietitian a while ago and she told me it was relating to the continued forcing opening of my cardiac sphincter (between oesophagus and stomach).

However, that is not to say that your problem is the same or not serious. I would advise you seek medical attention as soon as possible. It may not be serious, but at least you can put your mind at rest. I hope you feel better soon. x

I have the same issue

I have had the same issue just recently. I have been good for almost a year now, but due to recent b/p I have had chest pains. I have had chest pains in the past but they always felt like lightning in my heart. Yesterday my heart began to feel like it was racing and working harder to pump and hasn't stopped since. It's really scaring me, but I can't get anyone to take me to the hospital. Luckily I found and joined this site. I was wondering if anyone could help me? Is there anything I can do to get it to stop? When this started I also began to feel jittery, like a constant panic attack. But I'm not under any new stress. Is this a result of my b/p?

Hopexremains-chest pains

Hi,
I am glad you found this site - welcome :)
- Regarding your heart: If the racing hasn't stop since yesterday, please get to a hospital as soon as possible! ---
It can be serious -- Meanwhile, try to see if you can find gatorate or pedialyte (in CVS or any pharmacy)--most important:hydrate! -- Major deshydration is usually the cause for the heart racing/pain due to electrolyte imbalance or esophagus scarring. Anxiety/panic attacks: due to kidney/pancreas strain --- the electrolyte imbalance can cause heart damage, so please seek medical attention--
Best luck sweetie and keep us posted :)

I get chest pain as well, and

I get chest pain as well, and sometimes it radiates down my left arm and makes me feel weak. It's really scary. I do have anxiety and panic disorder, so it could be partially due to that, but I worry it's from bingeing. Does anybody have any thoughts on this? Pls try not to scare me, if possible lol I just had an ECG (is that it?) A couple weeks ago and everything was normal. But I've had a three day binge, and I don't purge anymore. I know that the heart is resilient and can take a surprising amount of abuse, and that it takes years to clog one's arteries, but this is enough to scare me into getting better. I just don't want to spend another night at the hospital, especially when ppl are in the waiting room hacking and coughing. I'm going to monitor my symptoms and if they get worse, I'll go. Anyone have any advice? Thx :) xoxo

Doc advised me how to get rid of pain!

Ok not sure this is what you are referring to but I have had sharp pains in my chest before. I used to suffer with it alot when I was younger and did alot of gymnastics. At one stage I couldnt do any form of warming up (gym) without getting an attack of it.

Anyways so went to doctor, as of course i thought was warning signs of a stroke, to find out it is the muscles in between your ribs cramping. When one of these rib muscles cramps it quite literally feels like someone is stabbing you in the chest and if you inhale it gets worse and is unbareable so you feel like you cant breathe.

To get rid of it my doctor told me to do short fast little breaths in and out over and over untill it goes, this will speed along the cramp. And it does work! Some cramps are worse than others mind and doing short little pants for one cramp may aleviate it in 10 seconds or one may need 20 seconds, but the panting will get rid of it, and of course allow you to breathe through it without having to inhale properly and so then having to suffer the knife stabbing feeling.

Hope this helps you, my doc said its nothing to worry about and is more of a burden than anything, but I would go to the doctor if I were you, even if just to put your mind at rest!

Whilst we are on I have some heart symptoms, I have one that is scaring me at present. Sometimes when I am laying in bed, I suddenly feel my heart do a big pulse which makes me hold my breath for a second, it only lasts a second but it is quite scary, best way I can describe is that it almost feels like my heart skips a beat to then be followed by a big pulse. Really freaked and going to doctor, anyone else had this??

My dad and bro have a heart murmur but I have never had one, and I had an ECG 4 years ago and I was normal. Can you develop one, but even still I dont think you can feel a heart murmur and this I can feel my heart doing something abnormal??? Anyone else have a clue what I am talking about????

OMG!!! Thank you, sweetie!!!

OMG!!! Thank you, sweetie!!! You just made me feel a whole lot better! :) That is in fact what I suffer from: an inflammation in the lining of my chest (not sure of the medical term, but it starts with a c). I was diagnosed when I was really young and advised not to lift heavy things or vacuum. And then I went to the doctor tonight and she reiterated the same thing.

With regard to what you are experiencing, yes I get that too. Sometimes it feels like my heart temporarily stops or skips a beat and I gasp; or like there's a fluttering in my chest. I have spoken with my mother, who is a nurse, and she and I both think it's anxiety, which I suffer from. Even if you've never been diagnosed with anxiety before, having an eating disorder can cause it.

I thought it was a heart murmur as well because I had one when I was born, but apparently it's not. You're smart to go get it checked out just to be sure, but I wouldn't worry, sweetie. I'm sure it's just nerves. We're all dealing with a very serious disease that can lead to all kinds of other unpleasant issues, like insomnia, anxiety, depression, and amenorrhea (all of which I have).

yes i get them

I get them usually when I'm going through a rough patch. I mentioned it to my doctor and she didn't do much to address it. I find it terrifying. I also have VERY bad anxiety at times so I think that mixed with the bulimia is really what does it. I HATE HATE HATE that feeling in my heart. It scared me beyond belief.

Let me tell you what, the years go on and we're still fighting it.

im actually really scared

im actually really scared what ive done to health...especially my heart.
Before my bulimia i was anorexic, it got to the point that i wouldn't be able to get out of bed in the morning, id wake up to a paralysing pain in my chest. Every time i moved there would be a tearing pain in my heart, It would take me about 5 minutes to pull myself from bed to get ready for school. a healthy person would do it in 3 seconds.
I started to think i was going to die, the pains started coming on not only in the morning but during the day as well. i refused to go to a doctor, i dont know how i was so convincing because looking back on photos now.. i cry, mostly embarrassed that i looked like that, i use to wonder why people would stare at me, i thought it was because i looked good, i was 5'10 and 40kg. it was in no way attractive.
I remember my formal date hadnt seen me in a while because id been working overseas.
He looked at me and practically choked. i feel sick when think about it.
I made a promise to myself and my family to gain weight and this time i really meant it, i really wanted to be able to leave the house without 5 layers of clothing and still managing to scare people. but i was still refusing to see a doctor. i wanted to recover on my own. but with the temptation of something other than the taste of carrots i went out of controll, i would binge eat and as time went on my binges got bigger and bigger and more uncontrollable. of course my stomach would hurt and i would throw up. The pains in my chest are less now, i sometimes get them during vomitting but i no longer think there going to kill me.
i just want to be healthy but i cant just be an average sized girl. that would mean career over. but if this is what i go through for a pay check, maybe it wouldnt be so much of a compromise.
I just want my life back . I just want to stop pushing away everyone who loves me because this god dam disease messes with my emotions and makes me depressed all the time

Point is it sucks we go through this but the possibility of a heart attack wont deter us.
I wish i could brain wash this disease out of me.

I had the same pains when i was throwing up on a more regular basis. I have now gotten to the point where i only throw up when i ate something that disgusts me... any way the point is the chest pains used to scare me so much, and now i don't have them any more. Before i read all of these comments i didn't really think that they were connected to throwing up, but looking back it makes complete sense. I haunt had a chest pain in two weeks and it feels amazing. I think i may still check with the doctor just to make sure no damage is done. Does any one have experience with telling a doctor you have an ED... i have never done so and i am kinda nervous.
