The effect of the media

Bulimia is a cultural trait, it rarely exists in third world countries where food is scarce. Eating disorders are more prominent in Westernized countries where there is enormous pressure on people to be thin.

You are probably well aware that our society puts enormous emphasis on looks and appearance. This is turn can create body dissatisfaction and low self esteem. A gowing trend is to measure up against skinny celebrities and 'US size 0 fashion craze'.

It does not help matters that the word ‘diet’ is continually bombarded through every magazine and newspaper on a daily basis.

The younger generation are especially susceptible to what is happening around them, they are also more inclined to try out dieting, a very popular and very dangerous trend among teenagers and young adults.
