Please take time to read through the in-depth version of the 'Ansel Keys semi-starvation study', 1950.

Although this research was carried out in the 50s, the study offers the most insightful information of both physical and psychological effects of food restriction to date. Obviously 'these days' food restriction studies are not allowed to be carried out due to moral reasons.
