Munchausen Syndrome By Internet

Hey all,
so I understand that this site originated in AU, correct? I am American, and we have a growing problem here with something called Munchausen Syndrome By Internet. It basically means that people get on chat boards/forums that are focused on a particular illness or condition, and they pretend to have that illness to garner sympathy and attention. It can be extremely devastating to the other people in the forum, and it is a serious mental illness.

The reason I write about it here is because I have begun to feel unsafe on the internet. There is really no way of knowing if we are who we say we are.

I'm hoping that this is strictly an American thing. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

I've thought about this, but

I've thought about this, but I use this sight to blog - helps me get my thought ordered. I can only be responsible for myself - if someone is 'pretending' they can go ahead - sad but not my issue. As for advice from others - I take it if it fits me - if not I disregard. This program is working for me (hope it does for you too). My advice is just focus on your recovery & don't worry too much about the inevitable sickos out there.

I've never heard of this but

I've never heard of this but how incredibly sad that people do such a thing. This is one of the only sites I know of for help with bulimia and most of the people who have come here have hit rock bottom and desperate. I guess that's all you can do is focus on your own recovery, you may never know people being truthful or not but I would like to give people the. Benefit of the doubt especially on here. If they want to lie about it well they're the one with even a bigger problem. This site is nothing but fanTastic in my eyes and has helped me to get to where I am today. We are a group that is mis understood, not as accepted as other disorders if you know what I mean and I am so thankful that I can share with people who 'get' how i am feeling. You'd have to be one sad sorry sack if you were doing it for extra attention.

I'm so glad to hear that is

I'm so glad to hear that is your experience!
yes, as bulimics we live with heavy shame and already feel like freaks. And yes, people who have this disorder have serious problems. I won't post a link, but if you Google the term you will find HORRIFIC stories.

I know that isn't directly related to our journey, but I am happy for the reassurance that people on here are sincere. I have also found that to be the case. :)

Well, that is kinda scary

Well, that is kinda scary really. But as complicated as bulimia is, I don't think anyone would be able to pretend to have this problem. I mean the majority of people know that we binge/purge, but they don't know the details (calorie counting, scales 'addiction', as well is all our issues around food). So I think that it would be very hard work to pretend to be bulimic without getting noticed. Gosh.. that sounds really weird.. but still those people must have their own issues as well.
Keep up with recovery hun. And this site really helps, because it offers support and hope. I am using it for about 2 years now (on and off) and I haven't seen anything suspicious.

You know what mettamommy I

You know what mettamommy I can't even be bothered to even google or read anything about it. It's the first time I've ever heard of such a thing but I seem to live in my own little bubble here in the uk so not sure if it is here or not. And in my world that's where it can stay. Hope you have a great day all the same. M x

The internet isn't a

The internet isn't a particularly safe place, which is why all the usual safety recommendations shoud apply here, too. No identifying personal details on a public forum and common sense.
This site has literally been a life-saver for me, but that doesn't mean that I would be comfortable putting my name or photo or anything else like that on here. Not because I don't trust the people I have come to know and love, but because this can be accessed by anyone anywhere.
